The agrifood sector, a solid pillar of the Moldovan economy

The agricultural sector plays a central role in the country’s economy. In 2017, agriculture accounted for 17,7 percent of GDP and about 33 percent of the total employed population were employed in agriculture.

Moldova possesses substantial agricultural resources; its climate and fertile soils support a wide range of crops. The agricultural land area is 74.0% of the Republic of Moldova’s total available land, while the arable land area is 53.8% of the total available land. The country is an important regional producer of grapes and grape products, and its orchards produce significant amounts of fruit, including plums, apricots, cherries, and peaches.

Room for Improvement

Drought is the principal perceived agriculture risk in the country, which is exposed to recurrent drought events, severely impacting crop yields and livestock. Furthermore, many land parcels are losing their natural fertility and require rehabilitation.

Rich and various Moldovan cuisine has been greatly influenced by traditional cuisines of other nations on its territory, such as Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Gagauz, Russian, Greek and Turkish cuisines.
