Cultivated Meat for The Future
Meet FORMeat, an EIT Food startup from Germany who are focused on doing things differently in the world of cultivated meat, specifically addressing the challenge of cost and texture, a win-win situation for scaling it.
1) What is your idea?
"At FORMeat, our mission is to make cultivated meat truly scalable by addressing one of its biggest challenges: high production costs. While many companies have succeeded in growing meat from animal cells, the process remains costly and difficult to scale.
Instead of using classical suspension bioreactors, which are commonly used in the industry but not optimized for structure formation, we developed a fiber spinning technology that creates continuous muscle fibers directly from cultivated cells. This approach is faster, uses fewer resources, and is built for industrial-scale production.
Our process is patent pending and supported by a custom-built formulation that enables efficient fiber formation. As a result, both production time and material consumption are significantly reduced. Beyond efficiency, the method also solves another persistent problem: texture. By mimicking natural muscle structure, it produces fibrous meat that tastes, looks, feels, and chews like real meat."
2. Where can we find your products?
"FORMeat is not yet on the market, but we are actively preparing for pilot production.
We are building a B2B technology platform that combines our fiber spinning device with specially developed consumables. This platform enables cultivated meat producers to reduce their production costs and create meat with texture like conventional animal meat. With our system, they can simplify scale-up, shorten production time, and improve the quality of their final product.
FORMeat is always open to new collaborations with industry and research partners that are actively working towards the future of food and biotech"
3. How has EIT Food supported you on your journey?
“Through the EIT food Seedbed Incubator program (Cohort 2024), we worked closely with experienced business mentors who challenged our thinking, helped us sharpen our value proposition, and guided us in defining a clear customer profile. Their support was instrumental in aligning our technical solution with real market needs and in building a commercially viable go-to-market strategy.
Equally valuable was access to EIT Food’s broad and dynamic network. This opened doors to industry experts, potential collaborators, and future partners, giving us greater visibility, new perspectives, and concrete opportunities to grow. The connections we made continue to support us as we expand our presence in the cultivated meat ecosystem."
