ReWeeMap
Crop Field monitoring service based on Remote sensing weeds detection and mapping
The prevalence of a toxic weed, Datura Stramonium, is increased in different crops for human consumption, such as wheat, soybean, corn and vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn, green peas, green beans, red peppers and spice peppers. Datura Stramonium contains tropane alkaloids which are toxic for animals and humans. The fruit and the seed of Datura S. are difficult to remove reliably from the crop. Therefore, their presence in the crop should be prevented. Numerous reports have been of human poisonings, including mortalities, due to the accidental ingestion of Datura parts. Remote sensing and mapping can replace the current visual identification methods and close out those areas of the fields that are contaminated by physical walking through with a more efficient one. This will result in better consumer health and reduce the frequency and amount of rejected raw materials resulting in waste.
ReWeeMap aims to develop a smart farm management service to monitor weeds in crop fields remotely. The project focuses on the specific Datura Stramonium identification in sweet corn, green pea, pepper or tomato fields as they play a key role in European vegetable and grain processing. The project is led by Beta Via (formerly ART21) and includes Campden CBHU, AGRI-CORN, UNIVER-Agro, and the University of Szeged.
