The Navarra 360º landscape project is looking for more farmers willing to transition to regenerative agriculture
In the first year of this pilot project, 15 cereal farms covering more than 1,500 hectares have already taken the step to join this pioneering project, which improves soil health, biodiversity, carbon footprint, water use, and also measures social and economic indicators.
Regenerative agriculture is a growing phenomenon in Europe thanks to individual producers' commitment to these sustainable practices. But for it to spread on a large scale, new ideas are needed. One of the most notable at the European level is the Navarra 360º pilot project, which seeks to involve the entire value chain: from producers to cooperatives, distributors, financial institutions, and both public and private organizations. After a year of work, this project is already beginning to take its first steps. A total of 15 farmers, who have been developing sustainable techniques for some time, have joined the project with more than 1,500 hectares of extensive crops. Another 19 are expected to join soon.
Next courses announced
Starting from the 19th of September, this next phase of the project will execute 5 more courses that will be developed in the following locations:
- 19th of September, 10:00 to 13:00 in EVENA, Olite.
- 26th of September, 10:00 to 13:00 in Barasoain.
- 3rd of October, 10:00 to 13:00 in EVENA, Olite.
- 10th of October, 10:00 to 13:00 in EVENA, Olite.
- 17th of October, 10:00 to 13:00 in EVENA, Olite.
The general objective of these courses is to further learn the tecnical and pratical practices of regenerative agriculture, applied to the Navarre region.
The objectives of Navarra 360º
These training courses support local producers in the project, which has already been joined by major brands such as Danone, Intermalta, Alpro, and Cargill, interested in supporting the transition to regenerative agriculture in their supply chains. The aim of the project is to support 80 farmers in the transition to regenerative agriculture and to have an impact on 3,200 hectares.
Banks, technology centers, and institutions have also joined this pioneering initiative in Europe. The involvement of the agricultural unions ENHE and UAGN, as well as the Union of Agri-Food Cooperatives of Navarra (UCAN), is proving to be key.
This project is in line with the commitment of the Department of Agriculture of the Government of Navarre “to these models of regenerative agriculture in order to work towards a more sustainable and resilient primary sector, but also one that is more productive and competitive.” The progress of the project was presented at a meeting held in April with Minister José María Aierdi and Director of Agriculture Ignacio Gil.
Navarra 360 is part of a flagship initiative — the Regenerative Innovation Portfolio — which EIT Food is financially supporting, leading, and convening in collaboration with FoodValley for its delivery. The aim is to accelerate the transition to regenerative agriculture practices through diverse and ambitious landscapes across Europe. Navarra 360 is the first of these landscapes, serving as a pilot to test the approach and provide a learning basis for the future new landscapes.
