Despite ongoing efforts to promote gender equality in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), women remain significantly underrepresented in these fields across Europe. This gap is not solely the result of individual choices but often stems from systemic barriers such as gender biases, cultural stereotypes, and a lack of female role models (European Commission, 2020; UNESCO, 2017). These disparities are particularly evident in engineering, technology, and computer sciences, where women's participation is low and declines even further at the professional level. Systemic obstacles—including unconscious biases, limited mentoring opportunities, and challenges related to work-life balance—further hinder women's advancement to higher positions in STEAM careers (European Institute for Gender Equality, 2021).
To address these challenges, the STREAM IT project, funded under the Horizon Europe program and launched in January 2024, aims to drive change by eliminating persistent gender inequalities in STEAM education, research, and innovation. The project supports the implementation of The European Manifesto for Gender-Inclusive STE(A)M Education and Careers, empowering underrepresented groups—especially women and girls—promoting gender-responsive career pathways, and supporting STEAM educators. Through knowledge exchange and capacity building, STREAM IT strives to break down gender-related barriers and create a more inclusive environment for future generations of STEAM professionals.
EIT Food North-East is one of 21 partners implementing the STREAM IT project, coordinated by the HÉTFA Research Institute in Hungary.
As part of the STREAM IT project, EIT Food CLC North-East has planned a series of six free online webinars in 2025, targeted at a Polish audience. These webinars are open to educators at both school and academic levels, company representatives, and anyone interested in exploring STEAM and the challenges along their educational and professional journey. During the webinars, participants will learn about the STREAM IT project and its latest research findings. They will also discover a wide range of programs and initiatives supporting the development of women and girls in STEAM in Poland. Additionally, direct interaction with alumnae of selected programs and experts in the field will enable knowledge exchange and provide inspiration for implementing best practices in both professional and everyday life.
