Empowering Women in Agrifood Programme in Central-Eastern Europe: meet 2024 cohort
The EWA programme has completed its 2024 Matchmaking phase, launching support for 70 agrifood projects. Women entrepreneurs from 7 Central-Eastern European countries are now paired with mentors to advance their innovative ideas.
All matchmaking events in the Empowering Women in Agrifood (EWA) programme 2024 are officially finished! The EWA programme has successfully launched its next edition, marking a significant step in supporting women innovators in the agrifood sector. This initiative provides education, mentorship, and financial support to develop innovative agrifood ideas.
Together with the local organizations implementing the programme, 70 projects were selected for the 2024 cohort. Participants from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, and Ukraine have been matched with mentors to further develop their business ideas during 1:1 mentoring.
Latvia: Pioneering sustainable food solutions
Latvian women entrepreneurs are revolutionizing nutrition and sustainability with several innovative projects. The Protein-rich Mushroom Product offers a versatile, long-lasting vegetarian and vegan protein source ideal for daily use, hiking, and emergencies. Apple Fibre Powder, made from apple pomace, contains 93% fiber with no preservatives or added sugars, making it an excellent vegan dietary supplement. Potato Peel Extracts create antioxidant extracts and biodegradable food packaging from potato peel and starch, promoting health and environmental sustainability. The Kombucha Brewery produces a unique kombucha brewed from locally harvested Latvian plants, providing a flavorful and healthy beverage option.

Lithuania: Innovations in hydroponics and sweeteners
Lithuanian innovators are transforming the food system with cutting-edge ideas that blend sustainability and technology. One key development is Vertical Hydroponic Microgreens, grown using advanced systems that maximize space and minimize water use, ensuring fresh, nutrient-rich greens year-round. Another innovation is Birch Sap Syrup, a natural alternative to artificial sweeteners. This syrup offers a unique flavor and promotes sustainable food production. Additionally, Lithuanian researchers have created edible Vegetable Processing By-product Coatings. These coatings extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables, reducing waste and enhancing nutrition. These advancements demonstrate the potential for a more efficient, eco-friendly, and health-focused food future.

Ukraine: Embracing sustainability and functional foods
Ukrainian women entrepreneurs are advancing sustainability with innovative projects. They produce Freeze-dried Herbal and Fruit Teas that retain nutritional benefits, offering a natural alternative to dietary supplements. Additionally, they create Agricultural Waste Briquettes, converting residues into eco-friendly biofuel, reducing waste and providing alternative energy sources. Another initiative involves making compostable dishware from Corn Starch Dishes and Wax Fertilizer residue, promoting waste-free production. These projects exemplify their commitment to health, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.

Bulgarian participants are advancing both eco-friendly products and educational tools with notable innovations. They have introduced Biodegradable Chewing Gum made from plant-based ingredients, offering health benefits while minimizing environmental impact. Their Eco-friendly Pastries, crafted from sustainable fruits and vegetables, promote healthier eating habits and support sustainable food practices. Additionally, Educational Healthy Eating Games aimed at teaching children about healthy eating in a fun and interactive way. These initiatives highlight a strong commitment to sustainability and health education.

Croatian entrepreneurs are enhancing the culinary experience with several groundbreaking products. The Edible Culinary Thread offers an eco-friendly alternative to traditional cooking methods. Organic Spices, grown using sustainable practices, ensure high-quality, pesticide-free flavor. Live Microgreens deliver fresh, flavorful greens while addressing freshness challenges. Lastly, Freeze-dried Produce extends shelf life and preserves nutrients, providing a convenient, long-lasting food option. These innovations reflect a commitment to both taste and environmental responsibility.

Czech Republic: Promoting natural remedies and bee health
Czech women entrepreneurs are leading the way in sustainable agriculture and bee health with several innovative projects. Sustainable Herb Farming combines herb, fruit, and vegetable cultivation with environmental education to promote eco-friendly practices. The Nettle Seed Superfood initiative introduces locally sourced, organic nettle seeds as a nutritious addition to the diet. Additionally, the Bee Bread and Fungal Extracts project supports bee health by producing bee bread and exploring natural treatments for bee diseases, underscoring the crucial role of bees in our ecosystem.

Hungary: Engaging the community and promoting fermentation
Hungarian participants are making strides in community engagement and the benefits of fermentation with several exciting initiatives. The Botanical Buddies App educates families, particularly children, on plant care and sustainable gardening practices. The Probiotic Health Beverage provides a fermented drink with health benefits that address global issues like obesity and cardiovascular diseases. The Fermented Vegetable Range highlights natural fermentation to preserve vegetables' nutritional value while reducing food waste. Lastly, Wine Jams blend high-quality wines with fruits and spices to create unique jams that enhance traditional dishes and introduce a gourmet twist.

Supporting Female Talent Across 12 Countries
EIT Food, in collaboration with local organizations, offers women the opportunity to join a top-notch entrepreneurship programme in their native languages. This enhances accessibility and helps women integrate into the EIT Food community.
Participants will gain access to top industry connections, online training programmes, one-on-one mentoring, and a dedicated online platform. These resources maximize their entrepreneurial potential and ensure their business ideas come to a realization.
The EWA programme represents a significant step towards empowering women entrepreneurs in the European agricultural sector, fostering innovation, and contributing to economic growth and a sustainable future in agriculture.
Next steps
The programme participants will research the target audience, prepare a business income and expenses list, work on a SWOT analysis, etc. Finally, they will prepare pitches of their solutions for the Pitching event in November. The most promising projects will be eligible for grants of €5000 and €10000 to further develop their businesses.
At the beginning of December, the "Women in Agrifood Stories" international event will wrap up the EWA programme. This final gathering will highlight the exceptional accomplishments and innovations of women in the agrifood sector within the EWA programme.
