Early Teenagers Immerse Themselves in the Basque Agrifood System
More than 30 students from a Basque school took part in a Career Day held at the Technology Park of Zamudio and Derio, where they explored careers in the agrifood sector, learned about healthy eating, and discovered the importance of ocean sustainability.
Organised by EIT Food and AZTI, the Scientific and Technological Centre, the hands-on event was designed for students aged 13 to 14 within the framework of Hub4Food, a programme of Interreg Atlantic Area, and FoodEducators.
Inside the Life of a Researcher
The first stop brought participants into the daily world of researchers through a guided visit to AZTI’s facilities. Students toured everything from the laboratory to the experiential kitchen, rotating in small groups across different activity stations.
There, they engaged in scientific and sensory food experiments, created nutritious and original snacks, and tested their newly acquired knowledge through sector-related challenges and quizzes.
Exploring Ocean Biodiversity
The second stop took place at EIT Food, where students enjoyed a healthy break surrounded by nature before beginning the final workshop. Led by Biook, this activity introduced the diverse biodiversity of the Atlantic Ocean and current fishing practices. Through gamified experiences, including card games and hands-on discovery with a DIY microscope, students gained a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and sustainability.
Initiatives such as Hub4Food, which promotes innovative solutions for the agrifood sector—especially the marine-based one—and FoodEducators, which brings practical food knowledge to schools, continue to pave the way toward more sustainable behaviours and healthier lifestyles among younger generations.
