Planet conscious alternatives to plastic packaging

Meet MarinaTex, an EIT Food startup based in the United Kingdom who are developing new films and coatings that are a more planet conscious alternative to regular plastic packaging films and coatings. 1. What is your idea?

“Our idea is to replace problematic single-use plastics with sustainable, marine-derived materials. By using natural waste streams like seafood byproducts and algae, we’ve developed packaging coatings and flexible films with excellent barrier properties and antimicrobial benefits. These materials are fully compostable, recyclable with paper, and designed to seamlessly integrate into existing manufacturing systems, offering a truly circular solution”.

2. Where can we find your products?

“Our products are currently in development and undergoing trials with industry partners. While we haven’t launched commercially yet, we’re collaborating with packaging converters and brands to bring our solutions to market. Stay tuned for updates as we work toward making MarinaTex products widely available”.

3. How has EIT Food helped you on your journey?

“EIT Food has been instrumental in accelerating our growth. Through their Tech Validation Programme, we’ve gained valuable industry connections, funding support, and expert guidance to refine our materials and market strategy. The recognition we’ve received from EIT Food has helped us build credibility, attract partners, and advance closer to market launch”.
