Securing the Future of Farming

An EIT Food Consumer Observatory study exploring young people’s perceptions of agricultural careers.

26 Jun 2025

Despite positive public opinion on farmers - who are perceived as the most trusted actors within our food systems - there’s a significant lack of young people entering the farming profession, with only 11% of farmers in Europe under the age of 40.

Now more than ever, a new generation of agricultural professionals is needed to increase the sector’s sustainability and build resilience in the face of climate change.

Using in-depth qualitative methods, Securing the Future of Farming provides key insights into the interventions required to reposition the farming profession, examining the motivations, barriers and themes impacting young people’s perceptions of, and ability to pursue, agricultural careers.

The report provides practical recommendations for policymakers, industry and educators to help promote farming careers in Europe and help inspire a new generation of agricultural professionals.
