EIT Food Product Assessment and Certification Procedure

EIT Food is the market test bed for standardised food and beverage product environmental impact assessment and labelling.

If your organisation wishes to assess and formally certify/label a food or beverage product using this methodology and you must follow the steps below:

  1. Review the methodology document to ensure you can access and collect the required data needed to complete the assessment.
  2. Select and contract an LCA service provider that can complete:
    1. An LCA service provider verification questionnaire to confirm they have the software, knowledge and skills to implement the methodology (see below for more details).
    2. Required templates for primary data collection, LCA results verification, data quality rating and assessment results and submit these documents to EIT Food on your behalf for quality assurance and certification (see below for more details).
  3. Sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement with EIT Food.
  4. Provide the LCA service provider with the primary data and any other information required to carry out the assessment.
  5. Ensure the LCA service provider completes the LCA service provider verification questionnaire, plus the required templates for primary data collection, LCA results verification, data quality rating and assessment results and submits these documents to EIT Food on your behalf for quality assurance and certification.
  6. EIT Food will perform a quality assurance and verification assessment on the information provided by the LCA service provider, and if satisfactory, will issue your organisation with certification information plus labelling documents if required. This can take up to 4 weeks. Please note that you are not obliged to publicly label your product after you have completed this certification process. However, if you wish to share your results and grade publicly, you will be issued a certificate and a label to apply on pack or online.

How to Request Further Information

E-mail dis@eitfood.eu to formally request a list of recommended LCA service providers, LCA service provider verification questionnaire and templates for LCA results verification, primary data collection, data quality rating and assessment results.

Completed documents listed above should also be submitted via e-mail dis@eitfood.eu following an assessment.

Note: This methodology is in the final stages of a comprehensive review. Updated and improved guidance will be shared on the EIT Food website shortly.
