Óir na Farraige
Óir na Farraige is an innovative regenerative aquaculture initiative establishing a commercial seaweed farm in Irish Waters to supply sustainably cultivated biomass to the biostimulant industry. The project replaces wild-harvested seaweed with a farmed alternative, strengthening regenerative agriculture value chains, enhancing marine biodiversity, improving water quality, and supporting coastal economic resilience.
Óir na Farraige will develop and deploy a scalable seaweed farming system in Irish Waters to provide a sustainable, cultivated alternative to wild-harvested seaweed used in biostimulant production. Demand for seaweed-based biostimulants is rapidly increasing due to their proven ability to improve soil health, nutrient efficiency, and crop resilience while reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. However, supply remains constrained and dependent on wild stocks, limiting growth and posing environmental risks.
Over 18 months, the project will establish a pilot farm, validate operational performance, quantify biodiversity impacts, and demonstrate a commercially viable business model for scaling seaweed farming across Europe. The initiative will generate data-driven evidence on ecosystem services, production efficiency and economic viability.
By supplying sustainably cultivated seaweed to the biostimulant sector, Óir na Farraige strengthens regenerative agriculture value chains and contributes to a circular, nature-positive food system. The scalable model is designed for replication across European coastal regions, unlocking long-term growth in the blue bioeconomy while supporting EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork objectives.
