The jury of the 5th edition of the EIT Food Journalism Award in Agrifood Innovation and Sustainability unanimously selected the TV report “Ouro Líquido”, by Sandra Vindeirinho, Fábio Siquenique, Rui Machado Rodrigues, Pedro Pessoa and Tó Vasconcelos, broadcasted by RTP, as this year’s awarded entry.

Combining rigorous reporting with multiple sources and perspectives, the piece offers a complete portrait of the olive oil sector, from agricultural production to trade, including processing and packaging. With clear and accessible language, this documentary stands as an example of excellence in journalism.

Second place was awarded to the multimedia story “Os Açores querem proteger um ‘paraíso’ no oceano enquanto ainda há peixe”, by Nicolau Ferreira, Tiago Bernardo Lopes and Joana Gonçalves, from PÚBLICO

This work illustrates the delicate balance between ensuring the livelihoods of local fishing communities and protecting the oceans, drawing on a wide range of sources and a well-structured multimedia narrative.

Third prize went to another RTP piece, produced by Rosa Veloso, Tiago Passos and Sara Cravina. “A Alma da Serra” shows that not all Serra da Estrela cheese is truly Serra cheese, and reveals how the supply of milk is increasingly threatened by the dwindling number of local shepherds.

Organised with the support of Crédito Agrícola and in partnership with the Portuguese Journalists’ Union, the 5th edition of the EIT Food Journalism Awards was open to all journalists holding a valid professional press card who published or broadcast work on any platform (print, radio, television or online) between 1 September 2024 and 31 August 2025. This year’s edition received a total of 91 submissions – well above last year’s record of 73.

The ten finalists were:

  • Ana Mota (Smart Cities): “‘Fish Matter’ transforma sobras de peixe em novos alimentos e cosmética”

Before revealing the winners, the audience heard from nutritionist and university lecturer José Camolas, who explained what ultra-processed foods are and their impacts on human health.

Following this introduction, a debate explored other dimensions of ultra-processed foods: consumption patterns and the role these products play in daily life; innovation and product development; and the environmental impacts associated with ultraprocessing. Speakers included Ana Tasso, Director of Research, Development and Innovation at Casa Mendes Gonçalves, and Marlos Silva, Director of R&D and Innovation at MC (Sonae).
