EWA 2025 Greece: Kicking off a new cycle of female-led agrifood innovation
The 2025 edition of the Empowering Women in Agrifood (EWA) programme has officially started in Greece. Organised by EIT Food and implemented locally by AWomanCanBe.org, this is the third consecutive year the programme supports early-stage women entrepreneurs across the country through mentoring, training and networking.
Ten women entrepreneurs from across Greece have been selected to take part in the 2025 edition of the Empowering Women in Agrifood (EWA) programme. Over the next six months, they will receive personalised mentoring, training and community support to develop innovative solutions in the agrifood sector.
The programme, delivered by AWomanCanBe.org in collaboration with EIT Food, officially launched with an online kick-off session. The event brought together the selected mentees, their mentors, and key partners for a first meeting focused on connection, inspiration and guidance.
The session featured a welcome from Vanessa Archontidou and Angela Pantazi, followed by an introduction to the EWA 2025 programme and EIT Food’s mission by project leader Konstantina Togaridou. This year’s sponsor, Nikolopoulou Frozen Foods, also joined the meeting to share insights from its own entrepreneurial journey and encourage the new cohort at the start of their own.
From circular economy to agritech: meet the Greek cohort
This year’s cohort showcases the diversity and creativity of women-led innovation in the agrifood sector. The selected entrepreneurs are working on projects ranging from smart farming systems and sustainable ingredients to digital platforms and alternative proteins.
Here is an overview of the 10 women-led initiatives selected in 2025:

› Cricketos (Anastasia Fountouli) – An insect farming company producing frass, sustainable feed and high-protein snacks made from edible insects, while reducing food waste.
› SYNBIOSI (Ellie Gidakou) – A circular economy initiative transforming coffee waste into handcrafted natural soaps, with profits supporting social causes and women’s empowerment.
› Maria Boti – Millet Producer – Cultivating millet as a climate-resilient crop rich in nutrients, offering a gluten-free, protein-rich alternative to mainstream grains.
› PestAgroFoodNIR (Chrysi Papagiannaki) – A portable device using NIR spectroscopy and AI to detect pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables in real time.

Laying the foundations for growth
Each participant presented herself and shared her expectations for the programme, giving mentors an initial overview of their ideas and aspirations. Short messages of advice from the mentors closed the session, offering encouragement and perspective for the journey ahead.
The training roadmap for the coming months was also introduced, including sessions delivered in collaboration with the University of Thessaly. With matchmaking completed, the mentoring phase is now underway.
