EIT Food - Food Waste Challenge Labs 2024

Thu, October 31, 2024
until Thu, December 5, 2024
online

The World Bank estimates that one-third of global food is wasted. In North Macedonia, food accounts for 40% of solid waste-approximately 100,000 tons annually, primarily from agricultural surpluses. Waste reduces access to nutritious food, lowers income for supply chain actors, and raises consumer prices, disproportionately affecting poverty and potentially increasing hunger.

To address this challenge, a multi-faceted approach is essential. Solutions may include enhancing food redistribution programs, implementing better inventory management practices, and raising awareness about food waste reduction strategies among consumers. EIT Food, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s food community plays a crucial role in this initiative. Through their Challenge Labs, EIT Food fosters innovation and collaboration among various stakeholders, including researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders. These labs serve as platforms to develop sustainable solutions, drive behavioral change, and promote the creation of new business models focused on reducing food waste.

Focus

In 2024, EIT Food, in collaboration with Business Accelerator UKIM, will host the Food Waste Challenge Lab. Students will engage with industry mentors and university professors, gaining insights into the complexities of food waste and exploring innovative solutions. The challenge aims to stimulate the development of new or innovative products derived from food waste, directly addressing the need for food waste reduction and market innovation. Over the course of 5 weeks, there will be educational sessions followed by a final Pitching Competition. The challenge invites participation from students across various faculties, including Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, Economics Faculty, Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, Institute of Biology and Faculty of Agriculture and Food.

Participating in the Food Waste Challenge Lab offers numerous benefits:

  • Real-World Impact: Students will contribute to meaningful solutions that can significantly reduce food waste in North Macedonia.
  • Skill Development: Participants will enhance their problem-solving, teamwork, and presentation skills through hands-on experience.
  • Networking Opportunities: This event facilitates connections with industry mentors, university professors, and fellow students, paving the way for future collaborations and career opportunities.

The educational sessions will take place online, with the exception of the Introduction Session and Pitching competition, which will take place onsite.
