About your innovation

Viridian Seeds (VS) develops and commercialises climate smart crop varieties (Super-Crops) for sustainable transitions of agriculture and food systems using a proprietary genomics-AI assisted gene discovery platform for accelerated product development.

What motivated you to build a startup in this sector?

I have a passion for plant-science, sustainable agriculture and innovation. I have a strong agriculture/plant research background from top research labs. After successfully running an agri-biotech company in India for over 14 years, the COVID-19 pandemic halted international travel and offered me time for reflection. I realised how vulnerable global agriculture is to climate disruption.

Around the same time, my friend, Prof. Charles Spillane, a global expert in climate-smart agriculture at the University of Galway and a participant in the COP26 summit in Glasgow, came to a similar realization: that agriculture must become a powerful lever for climate mitigation. Together, we began to brainstorm how food systems could evolve to align with climate goals.
