AI Challenge 2025: Where Europe’s Brightest Food Innovators Meet Real-World Problems

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a buzzword reserved for research labs and tech giants. Across Europe, farmers, food producers, and retailers are asking urgent questions: How can AI help make food systems more resilient and sustainable? Can predictive analytics reduce waste across the supply chain? And what role can computer vision play in food safety and quality control?

These are not abstract puzzles, but rather the daily challenges shaping the future of Europe’s food sector and its contribution to a healthier planet.

Enter the AI Challenge 2025, launched by the EIT AI Community.

Beyond a Competition: A Matchmaking Arena

The AI Challenge 2025, launched by the EIT AI Community, connects startups with real industry needs, including from agrifood and bioeconomy leaders.

What makes the AI Challenge different from a typical startup competition is its matchmaking design. Instead of asking founders to build solutions in isolation, the challenge begins with concrete problems defined by companies, institutions, and cities, including some of Europe’s key players in sustainable food production and supply.

This year's challenges include:

  • Smarter Information Access for Field Teams - by Bayer
  • Tailoring Fertilization To The Land - by Grupo AN
  • Transportation Resilience and Accessibility in Crisis - by HCDI
  • AI-Powered Training for Modular Farming Systems - by Take Root Bio
  • AI-Enhanced Community Digital Twin for Urban Biospheres - by Take Root Bio
  • AI for Carbon-Smart Autonomous Agrifood Systems - by Take Root Bio

Startups aren’t just competing for prize money; they are co-creating solutions that could transform how Europe grows, processes, and distributes food. To get an idea of what that can look like, check out last year's winners’ stories: Mayday.ai, Isarsoft, and Nuavis.

What’s in It for Food Startups?

Startups joining the AI Challenge gain more than visibility. They enter a pipeline designed to accelerate growth and adoption:

  • Direct collaboration with challenge owners actively seeking AI solutions for food system challenges.

  • €10,000 award to kickstart a proof-of-concept or pilot project.

  • Access to the AI Founders Club, offering tailored mentoring and a strong network across the EIT innovation ecosystem.

  • EU-wide visibility as part of a recognised initiative advancing responsible, impactful AI.

For agrifood startups, this means exposure to cross-sector opportunities: from smart logistics and circular packaging to AI-enabled quality control and precision agriculture.

Why It Matters Now

Europe is doubling down on AI, and the food industry is a prime testbed for its impact. From farm-to-fork traceability to data-driven resource efficiency, AI is helping to close the gap between sustainability targets and practical implementation.

For startups, this is a unique window of opportunity: to find partners, scale solutions, and help define how AI shapes Europe’s future food systems.

Time to Step Forward

The call is now open for solution providers. If you are a startup with an AI solution that could move the needle on one of the challenges, this is your invitation.
