CRAFT

CRAFT’s mission is to integrate cultivated meat into real farms, ensuring production is farmer-led and locally embedded. The project will demonstrate how cultivated meat can coexist with traditional livestock and crops, creating resilient and sustainable food systems.

CRAFT (Cellular Revolution in Agriculture and Farming Technology) is a European consortium co-funded by EIT Food Impact Funding Framework Collaborative Programs. Its goal is to design, build, optimize, and commercialize the first cultivated meat farm in the world, empowering farmers to lead the next generation of meat production.

The project addresses the heavy reliance on animal-derived protein, which makes up 60% of global protein intake, with meat alone accounting for 34%. Cultivated meat offers a promising alternative, but the technology is often seen as a threat to farmers, while it can represent an opportunity. CRAFT tackles this issue by developing farm-scale cultivated meat production using smaller bioreactors to cut costs and reduce risks, aiming for market entry 2030, and educating farmers on cellular agriculture benefits.

Key outcomes include a demonstration farm with a transition handbook, information on cost-efficient cultivated meat production, a digital twin for optimized design, and three sustainable product prototypes. Community engagement is key, empowering farmers with knowledge and tools for a sustainable local food system. By 2038, CRAFT aims to enable 1,000 farmers to produce sustainable meat, saving 840,000 tons of CO2 annually and removing 500,000 animals from the food system per year. Initially focusing on Dutch farmers, the project has global potential.
