Feeding false alternatives: climate, biodiversity and health risks of upscaling pig and poultry production
In response to the urgent need to reduce livestock emissions, many global strategies and national plans are promoting a shift from ruminant to monogastric species production. However, this disregards the significant land use required for large-scale feed production, which contributes to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and increased emissions.
This panel will examine why intensifying pig and poultry production is not a viable mitigation strategy, particularly due to its dependency on industrial feed and the increase of public health risks. Panelists will explore sustainable solutions, transitioning away from industrialised animal farming and towards extensive and diversified farming models with integrated crop production.

Climate and animal agriculture: The soil health, nature-positive farming and consumption nexus
Industrial animal agriculture, driven by overproduction and overconsumption, is one of the key contributors to climate change. Meanwhile, certain regions, such as Sub-Saharan Africa, face the challenge of agricultural productivity and food security, which will be exacerbated by the effects of climate change.
Reductions in consumption of animal-sourced foods in high-consuming populations can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the number of animals intensively farmed and allow them to be returned to the land and raised using traditional farming practices that work with nature. Shifting back to nature-positive farming systems has the potential to reduce the reliance on chemical pesticides and fertilisers, therefore reducing nitrogen waste and improving soil health. Healthy soils are fundamental to keep the global increase in average temperatures below 1.5˚C., by removing and sequestering carbon, and to achieve long-term food and nutrition security and climate resiliency.

Big Meat and Dairy Narratives to derail climate action: Can you tell fake from fact?
The event will address the intersection of Big Meat and Dairy misinformation narratives and policy change, exploring how these narratives have already been utilised to shift policy in some countries and derail climate action. It will underpin the need for transformative change in the way that food systems are discussed in global and national policy forums in an interactive pan.

Unlocking the Power of Marginalized Communities in the Transformation of Global Food Systems for Enhanced Climate Resilience
This event aims to spotlight and amplify the often-overlooked but critical voices of Indigenous communities, smallholder farmers, and pastoralists—those on the frontlines of climate change and key to driving sustainable solutions.
The event will illustrate how empowering these communities can unlock new pathways for equitable, just and sustainable climate action for transformative food systems by showcasing their innovative agricultural practices and traditional knowledge.

Phasing out of industrial animal agriculture towards Equitable, Humane and Sustainable Food System as a pathway to 1.5C and Food Justice
The roundtable will explore a just transition in the food and agriculture sector that ensures food justice, environmental sustainability, and animal protection. Speakers from around the world will discuss how transitioning away from the industrial animal production model into equitable, humane, and sustainable food systems can reduce emissions, support biodiversity, and empower small-scale farmers, Indigenous communities, and marginalized groups. They will highlight how the Just Transition to agroecology and strong food system governance are essential for achieving global sustainable development, climate, and biodiversity goals.

Unlocking the Hidden Middle: Enhancing Climate Resilience in Food Systems
(Invite only)
This roundtable, co-hosted by Tetra Pak and UNIDO at COP29, will shine a spotlight on the pivotal yet often overlooked segments of the food value chain—such as equipment and manufacturing, logistics, storage, infrastructure, packaging, and handling. These segments, which account for up to 40% of the value added and costs in food value chains, are crucial for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of food systems.
By improving storage, logistics, and food processing, and by adopting energy-efficient and sustainable practices, the ‘hidden middle’ can significantly reduce emissions and minimize food loss and waste. This not only conserves resources but also strengthens food security and economic resilience, making food systems more capable of adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
