Real-Time Soil Intelligence for Smarter Farming

Nitrogen is essential for plant growth, yet managing it efficiently remains one of agriculture’s biggest challenges. Nitrogen levels in soil can fluctuate rapidly due to rainfall, microbial activity, and crop uptake — making it hard for farmers to know when and how much fertilizer to apply. Over-fertilization leads to wasted resources, nitrate pollution, and environmental damage. At SOILMONITOR, we are developing a smart solution: an automated lab-on-a-chip sensor system that continuously monitors plant-available nitrogen directly at root level. Our buried sensors perform daily chemical assays and deliver real-time nutrient data via a digital dashboard—empowering farmers to make informed, precise decisions. Our deep-tech startup is currently embedded at Kiel University and supported by an EIC Transition Grant. With a core team of 12 researchers and engineers, we combine cutting-edge microfluidics, optics, and environmental sensing to bring lab-grade soil analysis into the field. Our mission is to help farmers optimize fertilizer use, reduce environmental impact, and boost yields sustainably. We are currently conducting field tests and are actively seeking seed-round funding and strategic partnerships to bring our innovation to market.

By integrating magnetite particles, the product enables copper recovery and reuse after field application. SmartBerries Box is a simple, portable testing device for measuring polyphenol levels in berry juice. You place a drop of juice on the test strip, add a reagent, and insert it into the SmartBerries Box. After five minutes, the device analyzes the color change and displays the polyphenol concentration. It is designed for berry growers, food producers, and producers of extracts.

Polyphenols are natural antioxidant compounds responsible for many health benefits and the rich color of berries. However, their levels can vary greatly depending on harvest time and environmental conditions. Monitoring polyphenols is crucial, especially for extract producers — when berries have lower polyphenol content, more raw material is needed to achieve the same extract quality.
