Deadline: 31 December 2020

In 2021, EIT Food is launching a new initiative to create high-quality agrifood startups for entrepreneurs in Southern and Eastern Europe, from the ground up. The initiative will focus on team formation whereby we match people with technological solutions to transform the food system (the ‘scientist’) with brilliant ‘businesspeople’. Our aim in 2021 is to form 15 teams of ‘scientists’ and ‘businesspeople’ from across Southern and Eastern Europe.

EIT Food is seeking a partner to help us design and then to deliver the co-founder matching programme. This call document is for both components: design and delivery. The organisation or organisations selected to deliver the programme may be the same for design and delivery, or different. In the application process there will be particular questions targeted to assess the organisation’s ability to design the programme and others to assess the organisation’s ability to deliver it. The funding for the design of the programme will be released in 2020 whereas the funding for the delivery of the programme will be released in 2021.

Why are we creating this initiative?

EIT Food is launching this initiative because though there is no shortage of great technology in the agrifood sector emerging from universities and research centres in Southern and Eastern Europe, these rarely turn into high quality startups. Our research has shown that the key driver for this is the lack of strong team formation – whereby teams are too scientific and cannot get their product/service to market because they lack the entrepreneurial skills.

Other initiatives have demonstrated the power of placing the focus on strong team formation, as it builds a brilliant foundation to launch a venture. Though there are very few similar initiatives in Southern and Eastern Europe currently, programmes in places like the UK and France are increasingly popular with people from these regions which we believe shows the interest and skillset for a programme like this.
