On the 25 and 26 October, the CLC South of EIT Food organized an AgriFood Demo Day in Madrid. This event was the culmination of the Innovation Grants competition that awards prizes to innovative food startups that are making our food system healthier, more sustainable and transparent. In Madrid, the winning startups were Souji, who recycles used cooking oil into a cleaning product in only 30 seconds; and Feltwood, who create biodegradable materials from agricultural waste, that can be used as an alternative to plastics. The Innovation Grants competition ran in thirteen countries in Southern and Eastern Europe.
In Spain, the competition received 60 applications from startups across the country. In total, the competition received 400 applications! After a tough, first selection round in Spain, the fourteen best Spanish startups were selected for the AgriFood Demo Day in Madrid. On the first day of the event, the startups received training on how to improve their pitching and communication skills, as well as having intimate sessions with agrifood investors. On the 26th October, each start-up had 3 minutes to pitch their idea to panel of judges and a live audience. The first prize of 10,000 Euros was awarded to Souji and the second prize, of 5,000 Euros, was awarded to Feltwood.
