EIT Food South takes part in the Global Agripreneurs Summit

The assembly provided the ideal space to  work together to help bring life to game-changing innovations, and propel agriculture as a sustainable source of growth and economic development.

EIT Food South takes part in the Global Agripreneurs Summit

The Global Agripreneurs Summit is an assembly of agrifood innovators and leaders from around the world – where farmers, agripreneurs, chefs, investors, organisations, policy makers, and other world leaders work together to help bring life to game-changing innovations, and propel agriculture as a sustainable source of growth and economic development.

This year, the 4th Global Agripreneurs Summit was centered its theme as "Defining the Future Farmer 4.0". Envisioning how technology will transform the current role of the farmer and what this will become? What changes will this create in the food industry?  How will we address nutrition in this new dialogue?  

On September 8th, Begoña Pérez Villareal, EIT Food South Director, gave a keynote speech about “The Trust Barometer: How and Why the Food System Should be Transformed”. Pérez addressed the need to make our food system more sustainable, healthy and trusted. To do so, she underlined the importance to reflect on not only the existing reality but also on what consumers want and need and how we can build their trust in the food sector. 

“This transformation will be achieved focusing on innovation, education, entrepreneurship and joint efforts. So we need to reflect - Are we making the right choices? Do we know how to make the right choices? – and – Can we deploy the technologies to create better food solutions for human and planet health?” - Begoña Pérez Villareal 

On the following day, September 9th, the EIT FOOD Demo Day was held with the presentation of Joseph Gridley, RIS Business Development Manager EIT Food, and the pitch of the 10 finalists finalists who competed for two main prizes of €5,000 and €10,000. During the RIS Innovation Prizes, the most promising innovative early-stage ventures in the agrifood sector were chosen. The finals were organized in 15 countries of Easter and Southern Europe that are part of Regional Innovation Scheme (RIS). The selected winners in Greece were:

1st prize – Oliveex

Oliveex applies IoT technologies in food storage (specifically in fermented foods, such as olives and cheese) to guarantee the best product quality and minimize the profit losses due to spoilage.

2nd prize – BeeNotes Plus

Beenotes is a voice-guided Smart-Phone for beekeepers that combines automatic (voice guided) data recording on site and analysis and helps the beekeeper become more effective and efficient.
