Open call for an industrial Virgin Olive Oil producer in Italy to develop new technology

Phenoils Consortium is looking for an italian industrial oil mill to carry out an industrial trial during the season 2022-2023 at industrial sacle for testing ultrasounds and ultrasounds combined with pulsed electric fields to increase phenols composition and yield in the evoos.

Subject of the call

Within the EIT FOOD project - PHENOILS (New technologies implementation in RIS regions' olive oil mills for healthier olive oil extraction), launches this request in search of an Italian collaborative Oil mill for an Industrial Scale test on the new technology, Ultrasounds and combination of Ultrasounds and Pulsed Electric Fields to improve the extraction and quality of virgin olive oils to produce an Extra Virgin Olive Oil of superior quality.

Description of Ultrasounds technology needs:

  • Four ultrasonic flow reactors (Internal volume of the reactor 331 ml)
  • Four CAA-GP-1 ultrasonic generators, maximum power 1000 W
  • 4 laptops with specific software installed on PC

Frequency 22 kHz, mean power 600 W (for each reactor), residence time 3.2 sec for each US reactor.

Description of Pulsed Electric Fields technology requires:

  • The equipment to be tested (EPULSUS® by EPS) has an output power of 9kW. This output power corresponds to a capacity around 6-7 ton/h of olives (kneading line not exceeding 200 ton/day).
  • The technology (Pulsed electric fields, PEF) is based on solid-state Marx Modulator and generates bipolar or monopolar pulses for PEF treatment.
  • Specification of the equipment: output maximum voltage of 20000 V; maximum current of 300A; pulse width (2 to 200 microseconds) and pulse frequency (1 to 200 Hz) can be adjusted according to the necessary energy delivered during the treatment.
  • Electrical input for one equipment: 400 Vac, 3PH+N, 50/60Hz; 15A @400Vac.
  • The equipment has IP54. Cooling is made with forced air.
  • The continuous treatment will be applied on 1 treatment chamber installed in line with the olive processing line. The treatment chamber is DN50 and is enclosed in a safety box during operation.
  • The position of the treatment chambers can be defined together with the oil mill but should be preferentially install between milling and the malaxation steps.
  • Treatment time (residence time) is below 1 second. This value will depend on flow rate and PEF parameters optimization.

Eligible applicants

The test must be carried out in an industrial oil mill located in Italy, which has the capacity to grind 150 tons / 24 hours, and which has more than one 1st extraction line to be able to carry out a comparative test with the same olives.

The oil mills that could accede to this call should meet the following criteria:

Italian Oil Mill

Interested and open for the realization of a comparative test between the traditional system (kneading, malaxation and centrifugation) and the PEF integrated treatment (kneading, pulse electric fields, beating and centrifugation), with the aim of analyzing the improvement of production and quality in the EVOOs produced by both methods.

  • R&D team to give support to the trials
  • Laboratory to analize in continuous the yield extraction results in Soxhlet and NIR.

Scope of work

The tasks of the facilitator include:

  • To can carry out the trials for 2 days under stable conditions
  • To analyse in continuous the yield extraction results in Soxhlet and NIR
  • To let technicians of EPS and UNITO to be present in the trials
  • With respect to the chemical characterization, small quantities of the produced virgin olive oil obtained with the different trials should be provided to EPS and UNITO to make all the quality analyses.

Timeline

The trial must be carried out from October 1, 2022, to November 15, 2022. The company EPS and University of Turin would be responsible for the completion of all tests during the entire time of the same, which is estimated to be 2 days, with the sampling of the EVOOs and production control of both processes. On the part of the industrial mill, only the arrangement of the installations and the olive to be processed will be required, being the EPS and University of Turin the responsible for the installation and uninstallation of the Pulse Electric fields and Ultrasounds equipment to be tested.

Budget

The industrial test, which will be entirely free, should be carried out by November 2022, during the development of the new oil campaign 2022-2023 and will always count with the technical support of the heads of the company EPS (EnergyPulse Systems) and University of Turin, responsible for the development of technology.

Selection process

The open call will be published from June, 2022, until September 15, 2022, after which the collaborating oil mill will be selected.
