Miha Pipan: Better Origin

Miha Pipan is Co-Founder and CSO of Better Origin, an EIT Food RisingFoodStar based in the UK. Better Origin aims to fix the broken food chain through AI-powered insect mini-farms inspired by the waste cycles found in nature. Through partnerships with supermarkets, Better Origin uses and converts local food waste into high-quality animal feed. In addition to tackling the scourge of food waste, their decentralised approach helps revive local food supply chains, all while reducing animal farming’s reliance on soy – a major cause of deforestation.

Better Origin’s technology has recently underpinned the launch of Britain’s first planet-friendly, net zero egg through national retailer Morrisons. These eggs have been created thanks to their technology, which upcycles food wastes generated in Morrisons’ supply chain, turning them into insects, which in turn feed hens. This not only addresses a waste problem, but it helps reduce the egg supply chain’s reliance on soy imports.
