Decision Support (DS)-Innovation-Toolbox is a workshop hosted by the University of Helsinki


Decision Support (DS)-Innovation-Toolbox is a workshop training focused on decision-support tools for innovation practice, for young innovation managers and innovation experts in the food industry, and those who are in the final stages of their educational path. The two-day online workshop is brought to you by the University of Helsinki and the Technion Israel Institute of Technology. Participants will be introduced to and trained via an online platform and a toolbox of decision-making tools, which will be put into practice with the instructors and through active group interaction focused on innovation projects.


The workshop participants will be introduced to decision-support tools and a simulation platform, so as to support participants' product-innovation and process-innovation thinking, in theory and practice.

The course is delivered by the following instructors:

  • Avraham Shtub, Professor Emeritus, Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Israel; Dean of Engineering Ruppin Academic Center;
  • Bodo Steiner, Professor of food economics & business management, University of Helsinki, Finland.

After participating, you will be able to apply decision-support tools and also simulation-modeling tools to your daily innovation-related problems and projects.

This course will take place on December 13th and 14th of 2021.

Structure & Modules

Schedule (all times in CET):

1st day:

  • 9:00-10:00 - Module 1 - Welcome address, Introduction to EIT Food, Introduction of participants/teachers
  • 10:00-12:00 Module 1 - Introduction to decision support tools (DST) & Simulator
  • 12:00-13:00 - Lunch
  • 13:00-14:00 - Module 2 - Application of Simulator with data
  • 14:00-15:00 - Module 2 - Product value proposition & guided group sessions with example data
  • 15:00-15:30 - Break
  • 15:30-16:30 – Module 2 - Guidance on further integration of Decision-Support-Tools (with focus on CSD and Kano) 
  • 16:30 – 18:00 Module 2 - Workshop participants guided group sessions/ Q&As

2nd day:

  • 9:00-10:00 - Module 3 - Evaluation of the value proposition of a product  
  • 10:00-12:00 - Module 3 - Workshop participants guided group sessions on decision support tools (DST) & Simulator
  • 12:00-13:00 - Lunch
  • 13:00-14:30 - Module 4 - Final group works, refining project-based DST & Simulator applications
  • 14:30-15:00 - Break
  • 15:00-15:45 - Module 4 - Competency check 
  • 15:45-18:00 - Module 4 - Group presentations of DST simulations & applications
  • 18:00-18:30 – Wrap-up / Q&As
