Policy Workshop: Ensuring a Just Transition and Inclusive Governance in the livestock sector

// // Policy

Hosts: International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, YOUNGO Food and Agriculture, Coalition of Action for Soil Health (CA4SH), Environmental Defense Fund

A just transition in the food sector must align climate goals with food security, justice, livelihoods, and rural development, particularly across low- and middle-income countries. As the global community accelerates efforts to meet climate targets, the food and agriculture sectors face the dual challenge of reducing emissions while safeguarding livelihoods and ecosystems.

Drawing lessons from the energy transition, this dialogue will examine how policy frameworks can enable an equitable transformation of food systems, empowering local communities, ensuring inclusivity, and promoting sustainable practices. Key focus areas include:

Agroecology and low-input systems

Inclusive and equitable carbon markets

Biodigesters and off-grid energy solutions

Improved productivity in livestock systems for nutrition and health

Fertilizer reduction and soil-livestock synergies

Central to this workshop is amplifying voices from the Global South, including Indigenous Peoples, smallholder farmers, youth, and pastoralist communities, to shape future policy processes. The dialogue will also identify pathways for integrating food systems transitions into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).
