Promises vs reality: The role of Big Meat in undermining climate action

// // Plenary

Hosts: Mighty Earth and Changing Markets

The session will examine how the meat industry is actively seeking to maintain a business-as-usual approach in the face of environmental and climate destruction.

Here in Brazil, meat giants reign of deforestation, land grabbing and the destruction of nature in its supply chains, is masked by greenwashing, including here at COP. Beef companies have failed in their promise to achieve deforestation-free supply chains. The scientific consensus is clear: animal agriculture is a key driver of climate change and deforestation, and the best solution is reduction of production and consumption of animal products.

In the face of this, the powerful meat lobby is doubling down on its message that “more meat is good” at COP30. While many citizens across the globe want to eat more healthily and care about climate and nature, Big Meat is working overtime to create meat friendly messaging and undermine the science, to keep consumption above healthy and sustainable levels. Ultimately it is the planet, farmers, and communities who pay the price.
