‘SEE & EAT’: Communicating the benefits of visual familiarity as a strategy for introducing healthy foods into children’s diets

Parents know children should eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, but children often fall far short of meeting this target. SEE & EAT is helping narrow the gap between parents' intentions and children’s actual intake, by suggesting ways to encourage preschool children to eat vegetables.

Children’s food preferences depend on food familiarity and liking, which research shows can be increased by boosting foods’ visual familiarity before children taste them (for instance by looking at picture books), as well as providing them with repeated opportunities to taste new foods. SEE & EAT is developing an evidence-based resource which supports parents to introduce healthy foods into their preschool children’s diets. The benefits of familiarising preschool children with vegetables before offering them at mealtimes will be discussed on FoodUnfolded [LINK], and free resources that encourage intake of vegetables will be made available for download.
